In May 2023, former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed a landmark new global strategic partnership at the G7 in Hiroshima, called the Hiroshima Accord.

The Hiroshima Accord renews UK-Japan people-to-people links by committing to expanded cultural, educational, and scientific collaboration.

It supports increased academic exchange, language learning, and joint research initiatives, particularly in areas like climate science and health.

This set the stage for the MUSUBI initiative.
